Pune News: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has proposed the creation of three new municipal corporations in Pune’s suburbs to manage rapid urban growth and improve civic services. The suggested corporations would cover Hinjewadi, Chakan and the Phursungi–Uruli Devachi belt.
Speaking at a review meeting in Chakan on Friday (August 8), Pawar, who also serves as Pune’s Guardian Minister, said the plan aims to ensure better civic management in fast-developing areas. He explained that one corporation could include Uruli Devachi, Phursungi, Loni Kalbhor, Manjari and Wagholi, another for Hinjewadi and its surrounding areas and a third for Chakan.
The Hindu report cited Pawar as stating that, such restructuring is “a need of the future” as suburban regions require focused attention to handle traffic congestion, infrastructure needs, and population growth. “Planned development can be achieved if separate corporations are set up. It will allow road widening, better infrastructure, and services suited to the needs of residents,” he added.
Earlier this week, Pawar had flagged traffic and civic challenges in Hinjewadi, one of Pune’s key IT hubs, warning that IT companies might relocate if conditions did not improve. Chakan, known for its industrial base, also faces severe traffic issues, prompting demands from residents for improved governance.
The idea of creating new corporations is not new. In 2024, former Pune Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil had also pushed for splitting large areas from existing corporations, arguing that a single civic body struggles to cater to widely spread regions. Currently, areas like Phursungi fall under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), while calls for merging Hinjewadi with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have gained traction online.
Pawar referred to the state government’s earlier moves in other districts, where large municipal corporations were divided to form separate bodies, such as Mira-Bhayandar, Ulhasnagar, and Navi Mumbai in Thane district, and Vasai-Virar in Palghar district.
He pointed out that regions with a population of more than five lakh qualify for municipal corporation status. Creating separate corporations, he said, would help secure funds from the Centre and other agencies, ensuring proper implementation of civic projects in these rapidly expanding suburbs.
