A man was arrested and his minor son was detained for having desecrated an idol at a temple in the Pune district of Maharashtra. The alleged incident took place in Paud village on Friday.

The incident outraged the locals, who staged a protest denouncing the act.

“A CCTV footage from the temple showed the 16-year-old boy desecrating the idol of a local deity, and when locals approached the family, they were met with indifference," senior inspector Santosh Girigosavi of Paud police station said.

He said that they approached the police because the boy's father reportedly used threatening words.

A complaint has been filed against the minor and his 44-year-old father, who works in a bakery, the official said.

The family is from Bihar, but the minor was born in the the village and studied till class 4, he stated.

Following the incident, tensions rose in Paud, but the situation has now calmed down, according to authorities.

In a separate incident, a protest by locals opposing the proposed Purandar airport in Pune district got violent during a drone surveillance of the site on Saturday, leaving 18 cops hurt, an official said.

Six of the demonstrators were detained when they fought with the police during the agitation in Kumbharvalan village, the official added. However, the residents accused the cops of lathi-charging them.
