Pune Metro Update: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday stated that the Pune metro services should be extended to Uruli Kanchan, as the population in the region has surged significantly in the past few years. Pune Metro currently covers 33 kilometers, and the Maha Metro stated that the services are likely to be expanded for 33 more kilometers till Loni Kalbhor. Pawar stated that the extension of the metro till Uruli Kanchan will provide relief to thousands of commuters by significantly cutting the travel time and reducing the traffic congestion. The NCP chief also pointed out that the metro services also reduce congestion on the Pune–Solapur highway.
Extension to boost the regional connectivity: Officials
“Planning should account for increasing urbanisation in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and corresponding infrastructure needs,” Pawar was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. Apart from this, the officials stated that the extension of the metro will boost the regional connectivity and will increase the financial activities. Apart from this, it will also promote balanced growth in the eastern region of the city.
However, the officials stated that the authority will first study the feasibility of the extension, and a plan will be prepared accordingly. “We will study the feasibility of extending the route beyond Loni to Uruli Kanchan in phases. We will prepare a detailed project report (DPR). PMRDA will have to send a request to us after that, we will continue the procedure,” director (works) of Pune Metro Atul Gadgil was quoted as saying by HT.
“This will benefit daily commuters and open up new opportunities for economic growth in the eastern corridor,” he added. Uruli Kanchan is known for the BAIF research centre and agricultural base and has witnessed a significant surge in population in the past few years. With rapid urbanisation, the area also demands better connectivity to the main areas of Pune.
