Pune Metro on Sunday announced that 15 new trains will be added to the fleet to improve the connectivity. The authority stated that the ridership has significantly improved in the past few months, adding that the additional trains will ensure a better travelling experience. It further stated that the additional trains will also reduce the waiting period between two trains, as the central government has also approved the expansion plans. The authority emphasised that the train frequency will be brought down to 5 minutes from the current 7 minutes, providing major relief to the commuters.
Director (works) of Pune Metro Atul Gadgil stated that the need for more trains became essential after the center’s approval for two new lines. “We are planning to reduce train frequency from the current 7 minutes to 5 minutes, and later to 3 minutes, as the number of passengers is increasing. If needed, we will add more coaches to the existing trains—expanding from 3 to 6 coaches—and also purchase new trains,” Gadgil was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
“Out of the total 34 trains, 31 are currently in operation. Two more trains are yet to be added and will be delivered soon by the company,” he added. Apart from this, Pune Metro director (public relations and administration) Hemant Sonawane stated that currently around 1.7 lakh commuters use the metro services on a daily basis, adding that the number is likely to increase in the upcoming months.
“Central government approved two new Pune Metro routes — from Swargate to Katraj and from PCMC to Nigdi in August 2024 and October 2023 respectively. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these routes includes funding for 15 new trains,” Sonawane was quoted as saying by HT. The authority further confirmed that the new trains are likely to be added in the upcoming few months.
