Pune News: A social worker contesting the Maharashtra Assembly Elections from the Hadapsar constituency has been attacked by a group of five individuals in Pune. The incident, which occurred on November 7, 2024, in the Kondhwa Khurd area, stemmed from the victim's activism against encroachments and illegal building projects.

According to a Punekar news report, he victim, Mohammad Juber Iqbal Memon, 38, a local resident, reported the assault to the Kondhwa Police Station. He has filed a complaint against several individuals, including builders Ramzan and Aamir Kazi, along with Abdul Shaikh and two unidentified accomplices.

Charges against the attackers include unlawful assembly, rioting and causing grievous harm with dangerous weapons, among others, as outlined in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Memon is known for his efforts to combat illegal constructions, unlicensed liquor sales, and gambling activities. In the past four months, he has lodged complaints against 38 builders with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), leading to some enforcement actions.

On the day of the assault, Memon arrived at his shop in Badshah Nagar, where the accused were waiting for him. They confronted him, accusing him of causing financial harm to builders, before launching an attack with an iron weapon. After the assault, one of the builders reportedly told the others to refrain from further violence, suggesting that Memon would need to compensate them for their alleged losses.

Following the attack, Memon was hospitalised and later approached the police to file a formal report.
