Pune News: Petrol pump operators in Pune have raised serious concerns over the rising number of assaults on fuel station attendants and have warned that outlets may be forced to close after 7 PM if security does not improve. The Pune Petrol Dealers Association issued the caution following two violent incidents reported at Indian Oil pumps in Yerawada and Bhairobanala within days of each other.

According to a Times Of India report, the latest case was reported on Sunday night at the IOC outlet in Bhairoba Nala, where a group allegedly assaulted an attendant. A video of the incident spread widely on social media, drawing strong criticism from the public. Earlier in the week, another attendant at the Yerawada IOC pump was similarly attacked by customers, sparking widespread concern among petrol pump staff.

The association has termed the rise in such cases alarming and said that employees working late hours are feeling increasingly unsafe. Representatives have met senior police officials and submitted written appeals to the Commissioners of Pune City and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, along with the Superintendent of Pune Rural Police, asking for strict and immediate action.

Dealers said they are continuing operations for now but stressed that stronger security arrangements are needed. They urged police to increase patrolling and ensure better protection for frontline workers who handle thousands of customers daily.

The Pune Pulse report cited Dhruv Ruparel, President of the Pune Petrol Dealers Association as stating, “Attendants are not just employees—they are frontline service providers responsible for the city’s fuel supply. Their safety, dignity, and well-being are our foremost responsibility. If any of our staff are attacked again, the association will respond collectively and decisively.”

The association stated that repeated attacks have created fear among attendants, especially those working night shifts. It added that if authorities fail to strengthen safety measures, pumps across Pune may have no option but to shut after 7 PM to safeguard employees.
