Pune: The Maharashtra government has approved a Rs 4,206.88 crore highway project connecting Talegaon, Chakan, and Shikrapur. The stretch will connect the Mumbai–Pune Highway (NH-48) and the Pune–Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Highway (NH-753), reducing traffic in the region. The project shall also enhance Pune's infrastructure. The project was sanctioned during a state cabinet meeting headed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project is likley to make the commute in the industrial corridors easier while offering an efficient bypass for heavy vehicles in Pune.

Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur Highway: Key Features

Talegaon to Chakan: A four-lane elevated road with a four-lane ground-level road will be constructed to allow efficient traffic movement.

Chakan to Shikrapur: It will consist of new six-lane road designed to handle heavy commercial traffic.

Total Length: 53 km of upgraded roads along the state highway network.

Project Model: Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) will implement the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT).

The highway will start at Talegaon on NH-48 (Mumbai–Pune Expressway), pass through Chakan, and finish at Shikrapur on NH-753 (Pune–Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar route). It is expected to function as an outer ring road for Pune, reducing pressure on internal city roads.

Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur Highway Impact

Industrial boost: The Chakan MIDC area, already a hub for automobile and manufacturing companies, will benefit from improved logistics and reduced transport costs.

Traffic relief: Pune residents and daily commuters will see reduced congestion on key city arteries.

Flyovers and interchanges: Where required, flyovers will be constructed to avoid traffic interruptions at junctions.

The project is aligned with the broader vision of upgrading Maharashtra’s transport infrastructure and preparing Pune for future population and industrial expansion. Work is expected to begin soon after finalization of tenders and environment clearances.
