The Pre-monsoon rains have started sweeping Maharashtra, including cities like Pune, Mumbai, Raigad, and Nashik, among others. In the fresh development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert of heavy, very heavy rainfall in several districts on May 23 (today). The rainfall will continue to batter Maharashtra for the next four days.

Among the districts/areas with an orange alert, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Ahilyabai Nagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Nashik, and Satara are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Friday.

Red alert in Ratnagiri, Raigad

On the other hand, the weather department has also issued a red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts.

The met department has also issued a yellow alert for light to moderate and heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Sholapur, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, and Dharashiv.

Four-day forecast

On May 24, Mumbai, Pune, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are likely to face heavy to very heavy rainfall. 

The intensity of the rainfall will reduce after May 24 in parts of the state. On May 25, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg will receive very heavy rainfall while Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Nasik, Ahilyanagar, Pune, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will witness light to moderate rainfall.

On May 26, only Sindhudurg will receive very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune and Satara will see light to moderate rainfall on May 26.

It must be noted here that rainfall between 115 mm - 204 mm is considered very heavy, while over 64.5 to 115 mm is considered heavy, and 2.5 mm to 64.4 mm qualifies for light to moderate rainfall.
