A massive fire broke out in a slum in Thane district of Maharashtra in the early hours of Wednesday, killing one person and injuring three. The fire reportedly erupted at around 4.30 AM in the Azad Nagar area, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Commissioner Sanjay Katkar said. It soon spread throughout, engulfing several huts and shops.
After the fire broke out, the hut owners and other neighbourhood residents fled their houses, according to Katkar, who was in charge of the rescue and relief efforts at the scene.
“The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation is trying its all to control the fire. Total 24 fire brigade teams are at the spot. I hope the fire will be brought under control in the next one hour,” said Sanjay Katkar.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Prakash Gaikwad, the nearby dumping of waste caused the fire to start. “One person has died, 2 Mahanagar Palika Fire Brigade personnel and other 2-3 people have suffered injuries,” he told ANI.
MBMC's head of the disaster management cell Narendra Chavan said a charred body was discovered at the scene and taken to a government hospital for a post-mortem.
"We have got to know that two children have been injured and admitted to hospital. One of our jawans has also been injured," Katkar said.
The civic chief reported that up to 24 fire engines from MBMC and other nearby civic bodies were dispatched to the scene and that the fire had been contained.
The slum colony is home to numerous commercial buildings, he claimed.
