Aadi Krithigai 2025: Significance

Aadi Krithigai is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Muruga, also known as Karthikeya, the second son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This day beautifully symbolises the divine bond between mother and child. Muruga, praised in the Skanda Purana, is seen as the embodiment of beauty, courage and supreme wisdom. In Tamil, the name Muruga means beauty, and on this day, devotees honour him with special rituals, including abhishekams, puja and offerings in Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu.

The month of Aadi holds deep spiritual importance in the Tamil calendar. It marks the beginning of Dakshinayanam, when the Sun begins its southward journey. This phase is considered ideal for spiritual growth and divine connection. During Aadi Krithigai, devotees walk long distances to offer Kavadi to Lord Muruga, especially at his six sacred battle camps known as Aaru Padai Veedu. These rituals reflect deep devotion and mark the day as a time for blessings and transformation.

According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Muruga was born from the third eye of Lord Shiva as six divine flames. These were carried by Agni and Vayu to Saravana Poigai, where six babies emerged from lotus flowers. The Karthigai Pengal lovingly raised these infants until Goddess Parvati united them into one form with six faces, creating Lord Shanmuga. To honour the Karthigai Pengal, Lord Shiva granted that every Krittika Nakshatra would be marked by special worship for Muruga.

Aadi Krithigai is one of the most powerful days to connect with Lord Muruga, as the Krittika star is believed to be closely aligned with his energy. This day gains even more importance as it falls in the divine month of Aadi, the first month of Dakshinayana punyakalam. Along with Aadi Krithigai, festivals like Aadi Pooram, Aadi Perukku, and Thai Poosam also celebrate Muruga and Goddess Mariamman, spreading devotion and spiritual awakening throughout Tamil communities.

On Aadi Krithigai, devotees begin the day by waking early, bathing, and cleaning their prayer space. A hexagonal bowl of rice flour is placed before the image of Lord Murugan, symbolising purity and devotion. Ghee lamps are lit on either side of the deity’s image, and flowers and fruits are offered with reverence. Devotees chant “Kanda Sasti Kavasam” or “Shanmuga Kavasam” with focus and a pure mind, ideally without consuming food or water.

Those who are able to observe a full fast drink only plain water throughout the day. Others may choose to eat simple, unsalted food to maintain their devotion. In the evening, devotees visit the nearest Murugan temple, offer prayers, and complete their fast. The fast is considered a way to purify the body and mind, inviting Murugan’s grace and strength.
