Ahoi Ashtami is revered as a sacred fast in Hinduism where mothers fast for the health and happiness of their sons. On this day, they worship the Goddess Ahoi by praying and performing traditional rituals. Unlike Karwa Chauth, mothers open the Ahoi Ashtami fast after seeing the stars during Twilight. It is believed that women who have had miscarriages or trouble getting pregnant should perform the Ahoi Ashtami fast to be blessed with a child, especially a son. Because of this belief, some people also call Ahoi Ashtami ‘Krishnashtami.’ This day is highly sacred and spiritual for couples who want to have children and are seeking blessings. Many worshipers take a holy bath in the Radha Kund at Mathura, where a large number of devotees swarm to show their faith.

Ahoi Ashtami 2025: Rituals

Mothers observe a rigorous fast on Ahoi Ashtami for their sons' happiness and well-being. To show their intense love and faith, they refrain from eating and drinking throughout the day. Though the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat ends after the moonrise in certain regions, the fast usually ends after seeing the stars at twilight.

Mother begin the day with a ritual bath. Thereafter, women make a ‘sankalp,’ a pledge to keep the fast with devotion for the well-being of their children. Goddess Ahoi is especially worshipped on this sacred occasion, who is considered as the protector of children.

To perform Ahoi Ashtami puja, women create a drawing of Goddess Ahoi Mata on a wall. This includes 'Ashta Koshthak,' or eight corners, which symbolise divine energy. A 'Sei,' which is a hedgehog with its young, is also drawn to represent motherhood and protection. If some mothers can not draw Ahoi Mata, they can bring Ahoi Ashtami poster with the image of Maa Ahoi. The image also contains the seven sons and their daughters-in-law, as described in the Ahoi Ashtami Katha.

The worship area is thoroughly cleaned, and a decorative 'Alpana' pattern is drawn. A clay pot called ‘karwa’ is filled with water, covered, and set near the altar. The pot's nozzle is sealed with ‘Sarai Seenka’ grass, which is also offered to Goddess Ahoi as part of the rituals.

The main puja takes place during ‘Sandhya’ or evening twilight. Women gather together to perform the rituals, sing devotional songs and listen to the sacred Ahoi Mata Vrat Katha. In some communities, a silver idol of Ahoi Mata, known as ‘Syau’, is worshipped with milk, roli, and akshat. After the puja, this Syau is threaded with two silver pearls and worn as a sacred ornament around the neck.
