Ahoi Ashtami is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. This year, it will be celebrated on November 1. On this day, mothers across Northern India observe a fast and pray for the health, longevity, and prosperity of their children.

Celebrated just four days after Karwa Chauth, it involves a strict Nirjala vrat, broken after viewing the star in the evening. Some women break the fast after sighting the moon, but it may be difficult because the moon rises late at night on Ahoi Ashtami.

This year, many people are confused about which date to observe the fast and the Ashtami tithi timings. Let's understand its significance, puja timings and how to perform the ritual.

Why Will Ahoi Ashtami Be Celebrated On November 1?

According to Vedic astrology, Ahoi Ashtami falls on Kartik Krishna Paksha Ashtami during the Pradosh Kaal. This year, the ashtami tithi begins on November 1, 2026, at 08:44 AM and will end on November 2, 2026, at 09:31 AM.

Since Ashtami Tithi prevails throughout Sunday, November 1, the observance and puja rituals dedicated to Goddess Ahoi and the star-viewing ritual will be conducted on November 1.

By the evening of November 2, Navami Tithi ends, making the day invalid for the evening rituals.

Spiritual Significance Of Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami holds immense spiritual significance:

1. Protection Of Children: Mothers fast from dawn to dusk to seek Goddess Ahoi’s protection against illness, misfortune, and obstacles in their children's lives.

2. Blessings For Childless Couples: Couples struggling to conceive often observe the Radha Kunda Snan on this exact tithi at midnight to seek blessings for childbirth.

How To Perform Ahoi Ashtami Puja: Step-By-Step

These are a few steps that you must follow on the day of Ahoi Ashtami:

  • Devotees observing the fast should take an early morning bath and make a sankalp to observe a waterless fast for their children's well-being.
  • In the evening, draw an image of Ahoi Mata with eight corners on the wall using red ochre, or place a printed frame. Include depictions of children and a sacred hedgehog or cow family.
  • Place a clean earthen or brass pot filled with fresh water, covered with a bowl full of wheat grains, near the altar.
  • Offer roli, akshat, flowers, and bhog to the Goddess. Recite the Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha with grains of wheat in your hands.
  • Then conclude the worship by performing the aarti and prayers for the family.
  • Most observers break their fast after sighting stars by offering water from the Kalash. Those who follow the lunar tradition wait until moonrise to offer Arghya before consuming food.

FAQs

1. Can we break the Ahoi Ashtami fast by looking at stars instead of the moon?

Yes. Unlike Karwa Chauth, where looking at the moon is mandatory, the traditional rule for Ahoi Ashtami allows breaking the fast after sighting stars in the early evening.

2. Is November 2 observed as Ahoi Ashtami anywhere?

Some local traditions follow strict Udaya Tithi (sunrise rule) and may acknowledge the morning of November 2 for charity or bath rituals, but the actual vrat and evening puja must happen on November 1.
