Amavasya June 2024: Jyeshtha Amavasya is set to take place on 6th June 2024. In Hinduism, Amavasya is one of the most significant dates as it is designated to perform special puja and tarpan to satisfy the souls of one’s ancestors. As per the Hindu Calendar, Jyeshtha Amavasya is particularly significant as it also marks the birth anniversary of Lord Shani. Jyeshtha Amavasya is known by various names, such as Shani Amavasya, Jeth Amavasya, Darsha Amavasya, and Bhavuka Amavasya.
However, there are certain dos and don’ts which people must follow on this day to escape misfortune and avoid inviting the wrath of Lord Shani and one’s ancestors. Dos
- Observe A Fast
Many people observe a fast on Chaitra Amavasya as a form of spiritual discipline and purification. Fasting might involve eating simply simple meals or completely avoiding some things, depending on cultural norms and personal preferences.
- Engage In Spiritual Activities
Engage in spiritual practices such as meditation, mantra recitation, reading sacred texts, and attending satsangs (spiritual gatherings). Utilise this time wisely for spiritual reflection, meditation, and introspection.
- Perform Charitable Deeds
During Jyeshtha Amavasya, perform acts of charity and compassion by providing people in need with food, clothes, or money. Generosity and selflessness are considered commendable on this day.
- Keep Your Mind Positive
Maintain your physical and mental purity by keeping your surroundings orderly and avoiding negative thoughts and emotions. Use incense, candles, or lamps to consecrate your home and places of worship.
- Light A Mustard Lamp Facing South Direction And Beneath A Peepal Tree
As it is Amavasya, lighting a mustard oil lamp facing southwards is considered extremely favourable since the south direction is associated with Yama and ancestors. Additionally, people must also light a mustard oil lamp beneath a Peepal tree to seek the blessings of Lord Shani.

Don'ts
- Do Not Consume Meat, Eggs, Alcohol, Tobacco, Onion And Garlic
One must consume sattvic food on Jyeshtha Amavasya. Do not consume meat, alcohol, tobacco, onion and garlic as it is considered tamasic foods. Consuming the above-mentioned things can additionally lead to negativity and misfortune.
- Do Not Cut Your Nails And Hair
On Amavasya, it is best to refrain from cutting your nails or hair since it is believed to bring bad luck and ruin the positive aspects of the day. Postpone grooming tasks till the next day. Put off grooming chores till the next day.
- Do Not Purchase New Things
Amavasya is not a good day to buy new stuff, hence one should avoid buying new jewellery, shoes, clothing, vehicles, or any other significant item.

- Do Not Perform Auspicious Activities
On the day of Amavasya, people should refrain from engaging in any auspicious activities. Avoid doing Griha Pravesh, Mundan, Roka ceremonies, and launching new businesses.
