Annamacharya Jayanthi 2025 marks the birth anniversary of Tallapaka Annamacharya, a highly venerated Telugu composer, musician and Hindu saint. He is believed to have been born on the Pournami tithi of the Vaisakha month, according to the Panchangam. Popularly referred to as Annamayya, he is regarded as the first documented Indian musician who wrote devotional songs known as samkirtanas. His compositions, glorifying Lord Venkateswara stir devotion and devotional music in South India. Annamacharya's composition lives on in thousands of lyrical songs which blend poetic refinement with intense spiritual passion and he is still a revered one in Carnatic and devotional circles. This year, Annamacharya Jayanthi will be observed on 12th May 2025.

Annamacharya Jayanthi 2025: Significance
Annamacharya is said to have written almost 32,000 samkirtanas (devotional hymns) in reverence of Lord Venkateswara, a manifestation of Vishnu. Out of these, almost 12,000 songs have been preserved even today. He was the record holder of writing the most number of kirtanas in reverence of Lord Vishnu and is hence a legendary figure in devotional music. His style of music significantly shaped the form of Carnatic music and most of his songs continue to be well-received in Carnatic concerts even now. His songs are divided into two broad categories – Adhyatma (spiritual) and Sringara (romantic), evidencing both his piety and poetic range.

Annamacharya is also revered for his spiritual life and devotion to Vishnu. Singers and devotees alike pay homage to him as one of the finest musicians and spiritual poets of his day. He was an ardent opponent of caste discrimination and voiced protests against the social ostracism of the untouchable castes during his time. Many consider him to have been an incarnation of Nandaka, the divine sword of Vishnu. He is also lovingly referred to as the Andhra Pada Kavita Pitamaha, i.e., the grandfather of Telugu songwriting.
