Chitra Pournami 2025: Significance

According to legend, Chitragupta was born from a painting made by Goddess Parvati and subsequently took birth through the divine cow, Gomatha Kamadhenu on this sacred day. Certain scriptures also link the day with the wedding of Chitragupta. The believers feel that doing good deeds and acts of kindness on Chitra Pournami can ease the weight of their past transgressions, as Chitragupta accounts for each person's actions to Lord Yama. Individuals mark the day by going to temples and holy sites, conducting rituals and engaging in Girivalam, the sacred walk around holy hills, particularly in sites such as Thiruvannamalai. A dip in the sea, particularly when the full Moon tithi falls in Chitra Nakshatra, is said to be extremely cleansing and is believed to cleanse one of sins. This day promotes self-reflection, devotion and spiritual discipline among believers throughout Tamil Nadu and elsewhere.

Chitra Pournami 2025: Rituals

Chitra Pournami is fervently celebrated by women, while men are also free to partake in rituals and do pooja. Once they take the purification bath before dawn, the women scrub clean the front porch of their residences and create the traditional Maakolam, which is prepared using rice powder as rangoli. This artistic design frequently involves images symbolising Chitragupta like a pen and paper, indicative of his divine account book, where he records every human act. Alternatively, a few women install Padi Kolam or Ezhai Kolam at the south entrance of the house so that it welcomes the deity into the house for blessings.

On this holy day, devotees offer prayers to Chitragupta, as it is believed that offering sincere veneration of Lord Chitragupta can aid in balancing the karmic account and relieve astrological troubles. Among the foremost beliefs is that praying to Chitragupta on Chitra Pournami assists in removing Ketu Dosha in one's horoscope, which leads to confusion, detachment and karmic difficulties.
