Baisakhi 2025: Significance

The significant Harvest Festival - Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is celebrated under various names across different states in India. In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as Puthandu or Tamil New Year while in West Bengal, this festival is known as Pohela Boishakh. In Kerala, Vishu marks the beginning of a new year whereas in Assam and Odisha, Baisakhi is celebrated as Bihu and Pana Sankranti. This significant day also marks Mesha Sankranti for Hindus which signifies the start of a new year in the Indian Solar Calendar.

In addition to having a deep cultural significance, Baisakhi also holds a profound importance in Sikhism. This festival commemorates the anniversary of the revered 10th Sikh Guru Shri Gobind Singh Sahib who played a prominent role in establishing the Khalsa Panth - a sect that adheres to the principles of Sikhism. On the day of Baisakhi, people pay tribute to Guru Gobind Singh's efforts and legacy, reflecting on the values and traditions that the revered Guru embodied.

Baisakhi 2025: Rituals

The Baisakhi celebrations are marked by the preparation of various traditional delicacies. On this day, members of the Sikh community visit the revered Golden Temple in Punjab. The festivities commence with the path of the Holy Guru Granth Sahib Ji by esteemed religious gurus, followed by a ritualistic purification ceremony. The holy Sikh scripture is then placed on a majestic throne, adorned with beautiful designs.

A small procession is also carried out in which five Sikhs carry swords as they walk in front of the throne of Guru Grath Sahib Ji. A large procession of devotees follows the procession. The Baisakhi festival additionally marks the harvest of the Rabi crops in Punjab. Additionally, Hindu devotees begin their celebrations by taking ritual baths in the sacred rivers and enjoy the day by engaging in family gatherings and preparing and consuming delectable dishes.
