As per the Tamil calendar, Panguni Pournami marks the culmination of the Tamil year and the arrival of Chithirai month, the first month of the Tamil New Year. This day is particularly associated with Goddess Durga, Lord Murugan, and Lord Shiva, and is celebrated with great devotion across temples in South India. At sacred sites like Palani and Thiruvannamalai, thousands of devotees gather for special abhishekams, pujas, and processions. Many also observe fasts, perform charitable acts and participate in community prayers. Panguni Pournami is believed to bring spiritual cleansing, divine blessings and renewed energy for the year ahead.

Panguni Pournami 2025: Rituals

Panguni Pournami is marked by various traditional rituals observed with deep devotion across Tamil Nadu. One of the most significant practices is visiting temples, especially those dedicated to Lord Murugan, Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. Devotees participate in early morning abhishekams (ritualistic bathing of the deity), followed by elaborate pujas and chanting of sacred hymns. At the famous Palani Murugan Temple, large crowds gather to witness special rituals and take part in the Girivalam (circumambulation of the hill) believed to cleanse sins and bring spiritual merit. Many devotees undertake fasting or consume only simple, sattvic food as a mark of devotion and self-discipline. Women often light rows of lamps and perform special prayers at home for family well-being and prosperity.
