Bathukamma 2025 is a vibrant floral festival celebrated in Telangana which commemorates the beauty and eternal splendour of Goddess Gauri, the patron goddess of womanhood. The nine-day festival, marking the month of Ashwin, starts on Bhadrapada Amavasya, popularly referred to as Mahalaya Amavasya. The festivities conclude on the ninth day, Saddula Bathukamma, which coincides with Durga Ashtami. Intriguingly, Bathukamma coincides with the nine-day Sharad Navratri festival observed throughout India, underlining the common cultural bond. Women gather to celebrate Goddess Gauri, indicating the rich culture and traditions of Telangana during this celebration time. This year, the Bathukamma festival begins on 21st September 2025.

Bathukamma 2025: History

Bathukamma, a lively flower festival in Telangana, honours Goddess Gauri, who represents womanhood and fertility. According to a famous legend, King Dhramangada and Queen Satyavati prayed to Goddess Lakshmi, who then appeared as Princess Lakshmi in the Chola dynasty to show beauty, power, and eternity. Young, single women worship her, hoping for happy marriages. This nine-day celebration displays nature's gifts, as women make beautiful flower arrangements to honour Goddess Gauri.

Bathukamma 2025: Significance

Bathukamma means ‘Mother Goddess come alive. ’ She is seen as the giver of life and the protector of women. This nine-day event is dedicated to celebrating womanhood. Women offer prayers to the goddess Gauri for the well-being of their families, and young girls offer prayers in hopes of receiving ideal husbands. It is a fortunate occasion to teach young girls how to look after their future husbands and in-laws.

Bathukamma 2025: Rituals

The Bathukamma festival starts with a five-day preparation phase. Women clean their houses, applying cow dung to cleanse the area and invite Goddess Gauri. Men gather seasonal flowers to adorn the Bathukamma, whereas women prepare fine designs using whitewash or rice flour paste. Cow dung cakes are arranged in circles around the house, surrounding the house with festive colouring.

The Bathukamma, a flower arrangement in a conical shape is made by women using seven concentric rings in a clay pot. On top of the arrangement, there is a pumpkin flower and a glob of turmeric, which represent the blessings of the goddess. The young unmarried women dance around the Bathukammas, singing traditional songs and tales.

The festival ends with submerging the Bathukammas in a river, after paying homage to Goddess Gauri with sweets and flowers. A traditional sweet maleeda, prepared using jaggery, is shared among the devotees. Cultural activities like dance, music, and drama, including street plays called 'jataras', are a part of the festivities. The festival is a colour extravaganza, with women wearing new sarees and gold ornaments.

Women dress in traditional clothes, with young girls wearing 'Langa Oni', half-sarees, while performing the rituals. Married women exchange kumkum and turmeric marks on one another's faces post-Bathukamma immersion. Bathukamma is a celebration of femininity, people, and tradition that presents the honourable culture of Telangana.
