Bharani Shradhha 2025: Significance

Bharani Shraddha is observed during Pitru Paksha when the Bharani Nakshatra occurs in the afternoon. This typically happens on either the fourth or fifth day of Mahalaya or Pitru Paksha. If the Nakshatra is on the fourth day, it is called Chauth Bharani and if it falls on the fifth, it is termed as Bharani Panchami. Sometimes, the Bharani Shradh falls on the third day, so it is not fixed to a specific date.

The Maha Bharani Shraddha is considered to be highly significant, with benefits similar to those of the Gaya Shraddha. Though the Bharani Shraddha is usually performed after a person dies during this Nakshatra, some Hindu texts say that it can be done every year. These rituals are Parvan Shraddhas and are best done at sacred timings like Kutup Muhurat or Rohina Muhurat, before the afternoon ends. Offering water, called Tarpan is performed at the end of this day to honour those who have passed away.

Bharani Shradhha 2025: Tarpan Vidhi

The Kurma Purana and Agni Purana highlight the special importance of Bharani Nakshatra for performing ancestor rituals. Offering Tarpan during this Nakshatra is believed to help remove physical, mental, family and financial issues. Scriptures like the Vayu Purana and Shraddha Prakash also describe the spiritual benefits of performing this Shraddha. According to Hindu beliefs, performing Shraddha rites on Bharani Nakshatra can help remove doshas such as Kaal Sarp Dosh, bringing peace and balance to one’s life. On this day, devotees must face south and use a bronze vessel filled with water to offer Tarpan to their departed ancestors during the afternoon. The offerings are made with sacred items like sesame seeds, barley, black lentils, rice and kusha grass, making the ritual a meaningful way to honour one’s ancestors.
