Chaturmas 2024: The literal meaning of "Chaturmas" is "four months." The significant four months of the Hindu calendar - Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin, and Kartik combine to form this period. It commences on the eleventh Lunar day of the Shukla Paksha of the Ashadh month, Devshayani Ekadashi, and concludes on the eleventh day of the Kartik month, Prabhodhini Ekadashi. People refrain from performing auspicious tasks during Chaturmas. Let us know the significance of Chaturmas while also understanding why one should not perform auspicious tasks during this period. 

Chaturmas 2024: Significance Of Chaturmas In Hinduism 

It is customary that around this time, Lord Vishnu enters Yog Nidra on the magnificent Ksheer Sagar lake. For this reason, the Ekadashi that coincides with the start of Chaturmas is known as the Devshayani Ekadashi. Since it is the time for Lord Vishnu to awaken from slumber, the Ekadashi that falls at the conclusion of Chaturmas is known as Dev Uthani Ekadashi. During these four months, Lord Vishnu falls asleep hence it is not advisable for anybody to engage in any religious or auspicious activities.

Chaturmas 2024: Start And End Date

This year, as per the Hindu Panchang, Chaturmas will begin on 17th July and will end on 12th November. Lord Vishnu will remain asleep during these four months.

Chaturmas 2024: Why Auspicious Tasks Are Not Performed During Chaturmas? 

The Sun sits in the Dakshinayan during Chaturmas. In addition, Lord Vishnu falls asleep. The good deeds carried out at this time do not benefit from Lord Vishnu's blessings in such a case. Consequently, it is forbidden to do auspicious acts at this time, such as marriage and other 16 sacred ceremonies in Hinduism.

Chaturmas 2024: What Not To Do During The Period Of Chaturmas? 

This year,  from July 17 to November 12, do not plan any auspicious events. You should also refrain from doing any of the following: purchasing a new car, purchasing a new property, doing Bhoomi Pujan, digging the groundwork for a home, moving into a new home, or organising marriage and mundan ceremonies.
