Chaturmas 2025 is a sacred four-month period observed from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, or from Ashadh Purnima to Kartik Purnima. During this time, devotees willingly take on vows of discipline, such as observing silence, giving up favourite foods, or eating just one meal a day. Many also take holy dips in rivers and engage in religious practices with deep devotion. These months are seen as ideal for penance, self-restraint, and spiritual growth. This year, Chaturmas begins on 6th July 2025 and ends on 1st November 2025.
As per the Hindu tradition, it is believed that Chaturmas is unfavourable to start new ventures and perform auspicious tasks, as any work undertaken during these four months might yield unfavourable results. So, let us understand which auspicious tasks must not be performed during Chaturmas below:
Chaturmas 2025: Which Auspicious Tasks Are Prohibited For These 4 Months?
1. Conducting Marriages and Engagements
During Chaturmas, Hindus avoid organising weddings or engagement ceremonies, as it is considered a time for spiritual focus rather than worldly celebrations. This period is meant for penance and introspection, not for initiating new worldly relationships. Starting a marital journey during these months is believed to invite obstacles or delays in harmony, so families usually wait until Kartik Purnima or later to plan such sacred events.
2. Postpone Buying or Building a New House
Chaturmas is not considered ideal for starting construction or buying a new home. According to tradition, this time is reserved for inner transformation, not external achievements. The belief is that starting new ventures like house-building might disturb the spiritual rhythm of the months and attract inauspiciousness. Most people wait until after Kartik Purnima, when the period ends, to begin home-related activities with fresh and positive energy.

3. Refrain from Starting New Business Ventures
It is not advised to launch new businesses or investments during Chaturmas. This is because the months symbolise rest, reflection, and spiritual withdrawal rather than material expansion. Any new financial venture started now is believed to lack divine support and may not bring long-term success. It’s a time to consolidate, plan, and pray rather than act on major commercial decisions or commitments involving large amounts of money.
4. Avoid Upanayan Sanskar or Sacred Thread Ceremonies
Upanayan, the sacred thread ceremony, is not performed during Chaturmas. As this period focuses on detachment from worldly life and aims to deepen one's spiritual practices, initiating young boys into Vedic education or household duties is usually postponed. Performing such rites during Chaturmas is believed to disrupt the natural spiritual rhythm of the months and may diminish the ceremony’s blessings and intended effects.

5. Mundan or First Hair-Cutting Ceremonies
During Chaturmas, families usually avoid performing Mundan, the sacred head-shaving ritual for young children. As these months are seen as spiritually sensitive and meant for inward reflection, performing auspicious samskaras like Mundan is believed to go against the energy of this period. Devotees prefer to wait until Kartik Purnima or after to ensure the ceremony is aligned with divine timings and brings blessings of health and good fortune.
