Ganga Saptami 2025: Significance

The legend and importance of Ganga Saptami are mentioned in ancient Hindu texts like the Padma Purana, Brahma Purana and Narada Purana. Goddess Ganga is believed to have descended on Earth for the first time on the day of Ganga Dussehra, according to mythological traditions. Sage Jahnu, however, once swallowed up Ganga's water in rage. Following the intervention of Gods and King Bhagiratha, Sage Jahnu let loose Ganga again on Vaishakha Shukla Paksha Saptami. From that time on, this day becomes the rebirth day of Goddess Ganga as well as called Jahnu Saptami. That is why Goddess Ganga is lovingly referred to as Jahnavi, the child of Rishi Jahnu.

The River Ganga has a sacred place in the hearts of Hindus all over India. Ganga Saptami celebrations are especially grand in areas where the Ganga and its tributaries flow through. Devotees pray to Goddess Ganga with utmost devotion and take sacred dips in the river, believing it to cleanse the soul and erase all sin. Pilgrimages to Haridwar, Varanasi, and Allahabad are on during this time, with special pujas and rituals performed.

Most Hindus also want to be cremated along the River Ganga in order to achieve moksha, or salvation. Astrologically, Ganga Saptami is very auspicious, particularly for those who are under Mangal (Mars) influence and they are recommended to worship Goddess Ganga on this day in a bid to gain relief and blessings.
