The significance of Ganga Saptami according to mythology can be traced back to the Padma Purana and Brahma Purana. According to the legends, when Sage Jahnu drank up the whole of Ganga in a rage, he was finally persuaded by King Bhagiratha to release Ganga from within him seven days later during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Vaishakh.
