Gangaur Vrat 2025: Significance

The term 'Gangaur' is derived from Lord Shiva ('Gana') and Goddess Parvati ('Gaur'). In Hinduism, Gauri embodies marital love and success. During the Gangaur festival, married women worship Goddess Gauri for their husbands' longevity and prosperity. This vibrant festival is particularly grand in Rajasthan, featuring colourful processions and fairs.

Celebrations also take place in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal. Married women observe the Gangaur Vrat for their husbands' well-being, while unmarried women keep this vrat to find their ideal partner. The festivities also mark the arrival of Spring, symbolising renewal and growth.

Gangaur Vrat 2025: Rituals

The Gangaur puja is celebrated differently across various regions, but some common rituals are observed everywhere. These include placing statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in a decorated basket, germinating wheat and barley seeds in an earthen pot and singing traditional Gangaur songs. Women also listen to the Gangaur Vrat Katha, a sacred story associated with the festival.

During the 18-day celebration, married women observe a fast, eating only once a day. Unmarried girls participate in a parade on the 7th day, singing and carrying earthen pots with lamps. On the second-last day, women apply mehndi on their hands and feet and wear traditional clothes and jewelry. The final days of the festival feature a street parade, where women carry the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on their heads.

The festival concludes with a ritual where girls smash their earthen pots and immerse the idols in water. Traditional sweets like Ghevar, kheer and barfi are distributed to worshippers or offered as prasad after the ceremony. These sweet treats add to the festive atmosphere, marking the end of the Gangaur celebrations.
