Garuda Panchami 2025: Significance
Garuda Panchami holds great significance in Hindu tradition as it honours Garuda, the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu and a symbol of strength, loyalty, and devotion. According to mythology, Garuda was born to Vinita, the second wife of Sage Kashyapa, while her co-wife Kadru gave birth to a thousand snakes. Through courage and sacrifice, Garuda freed himself and his mother from servitude, earning the blessings of Lord Vishnu and becoming his eternal companion.
This sacred day reflects the powerful bond between Garuda and his mother, Vinita. Celebrated especially by mothers and sons, Garuda Panchami is observed with prayers for protection, health, and the well-being of children. Mothers worship Garuda with heartfelt devotion, hoping to imbibe his courage and strength in their children’s lives. The day beautifully highlights values of selflessness, love, and loyalty, making it a cherished celebration of divine family bonds and protective energies.
Garuda is believed to bless his devotees with eight extraordinary siddhis, including the ability to become invisible or feather-light. Closely associated with Lord Vishnu, he embodies divine virtues like knowledge, strength, radiance, and compassion. Scriptures say that those blessed by Garuda’s gaze are assured of victory and resilience. Garuda Panchami serves as a spiritual reminder of unwavering courage, devotion to one’s duties, and the immense power that lies in selfless love and righteous action.

Garuda Panchami 2025: Rituals
On Garuda Panchami, devotees begin the day with a sacred bath and set up a special place of worship either in their homes or temples. A picture or idol of Garuda is placed with devotion, and prayers are offered using turmeric, sandalwood, flowers and incense. Women, particularly mothers, observe fasts and offer heartfelt prayers for the well-being and protection of their children, especially sons, seeking Garuda’s blessings for good health and long life.
One of the significant rituals of Garuda Panchami involves drawing or sculpting images of Garuda and serpent deities on the floor using rice flour or coloured powders. Devotees then perform traditional pujas and offer Naivedyam (sacred food offerings) that include milk, bananas, jaggery, and flattened rice. Lamps are lit, and sacred mantras dedicated to Garuda and Vishnu are chanted with deep reverence. These offerings are believed to please the deities and bring peace and prosperity.
In some South Indian households, Garuda Panchami is observed alongside Naga Chaturthi, where women also offer prayers to snake deities for family welfare. Married women tie sacred threads on their wrists as a symbol of protection and devotion, while mothers bless their children with vermilion and turmeric. Stories of Garuda’s bravery and devotion are narrated to children, reminding them of his virtues. The day ends with distributing prasadam and sharing festive meals with loved ones.
