Holi Bhai Dooj 2025: Significance
The Bhai Dooj celebrated after Holi has its own significance, despite being less popular than the one after Diwali. According to legend, Yamraj, the Lord of Death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a tilak on his forehead and treated him to delicious food.
Yamraj was so pleased that he blessed his sister, promising that any brother who visits his married sister's home on Bhai Dooj, receives a tilak, and shares a meal will be protected from sudden death. From that day on, the tradition of Bhai Dooj was born. To this day, brothers make it a point to visit their sisters' homes to receive their blessings and protection.
Holi Bhai Dooj 2025: Rituals
The Bhai Dooj puja ritual is a meaningful celebration of sibling love and purity. On this day, sisters begin by taking a bath and preparing a puja thali with various items, including a lamp, kumkum, rice and sweets. Meanwhile, brothers also bathe and get ready for the tilak ceremony.
During the puja, the sister applies a kumkum tilak on her brother's forehead and presents him with a dry coconut, symbolising protection and blessings. She then offers him sweets and performs his aarti, praying for his happiness and prosperity. To reciprocate, the brother gifts his sister something special, strengthening their bond of love and affection. This heartwarming ritual celebrates the beautiful relationship between brothers and sisters.
