Jalakrida Ekadashi 2025 falls on the 11th day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyeshta, according to the Odia calendar. It’s also known as Mahapataka Binasini Ekadashi or Putradatri Ekadashi. In many parts of India, it’s recognised as Apara Ekadashi. People who fast on this day with true devotion believe they receive blessings like honour, fame and spiritual growth. This fasting day is seen as a great opportunity to ask for forgiveness for past mistakes, seek spiritual progress and wish for blessings from Lord Vishnu for a good life. This year, Jalakrida Ekadashi will be observed on 23rd May 2025.

Jalakrida Ekadashi 2025: Significance
Ancient texts state that anyone who faithfully celebrates Jalakrida Ekadashi will be liberated from all sins and reach salvation. Observing this vrat is believed to provide spiritual merit on par with that of doing several significant religious activities. The blessings said to be gained are roughly what one would get from a holy dip at Prayag during the Magha month on Makar Sankranti, keeping a night-long fast on Maha Shivaratri, offering shraddha to ancestors in Gaya and bathing at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse. Such intense observation not only cleans the soul but also guides the practitioner toward spiritual freedom.
Devotees believe that those who fast and worship Lord Vishnu on Jalakrida Ekadashi will be given a seat in Vaikuntha, the heavenly home of the Lord. Sincerely reciting the Jalakrida Ekadashi Katha or patha is said to bring devotees gifts equivalent to the great charity of giving 100 cattle. For spiritual development, divine grace, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death, this day is of great significance. Fasting, prayer, and remembrance of Lord Vishnu on this holy day give the follower long-lasting peace, riches and celestial benefits.

Jalakrida Ekadashi 2025: Rituals
Jalakrida Ekadashi is enthusiastically celebrated in the Jagannath Temple of Odisha. The ceremony of water sports, which provides the sacred day its name, Jalakrida Ekadashi among the primary highlights of this occasion. The representative idols of Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Devi Subhadra and other gods are ritualistically transported to the Jala Kunda, a little holy tank located inside the temple grounds. Here, they are symbolically engaged in playful water activities, therefore depicting divine joy and the washing of earthly sins through the element of water.
Special pujas and aratis are conducted inside the temple on this day, and the deities are dressed in gorgeous traditional attire. Devotees come in great numbers to sing bhajans, recite Vishnu mantras, and offer prayers. Though the gods stay within the sanctum, the mood of the day reflects Lord Vishnu's water-related leelas. Special satvik bhog is prepared in the temple kitchens; it is given to the gods and afterwards distributed among the followers as prasad.
