Jitiya 2025: Jivitputrika Vrat Katha

A long time ago, a female eagle and a female fox lived by the Narmada River. They also wished to perform the puja and fast observed by women at the river. The eagle observed the fast wth utmost devotion and the fox was not in a position to control herself and ate. The cubs of the eagle, therefore, lived, and the cubs of the fox died a few days after birth.

There is also a legend regarding Jimutvahan, a benevolent ruler of the Gandharvas, who gave up his kingdom and lived in the woods taking care of his father. Once he happened to meet a snake family elderly woman whose sole child was given daily as an offering to Garuda. The brave-hearted Jimutvahan stepped in the stead of the son and confronted Garuda fearlessly. Pleased by this act of courage, Garuda decided not to kill the snake family any more and the mothers started keeping fast for their sons' long life.

A third legend is associated with the Mahabharata, post the battle at Kurukshetra. Ashwatthama, in a display of cowardice, murdered the sons of all the Pandav brothers while they were asleep and attacked the unborn child in the womb of Uttara using the Brahmastra. The unborn child's life was saved by Lord Krishna, and he was known as Jivitputra, subsequently becoming King Parikshit. To mark the day of survival, mothers keep the Jivitputrika Vrat and pray for the health, safety and prosperity of their child.

Jitiya 2025: Jivitputrika Vrat Significance And Rituals

The Jivitputrika Vrat is observed in three phases, and it starts with Nahai-Khai during the seventh day of Krishna Paksh in the Ashwin month. The day sees mothers taking a bath prior to having any food, and the food consumed should strictly be vegetarian and prepared in ghee and pink salt. The ceremony paves the way for piety and discipline for the mothers to spiritually and mentally gear up for the coming fast.

The third and fourth sections are Paran and Khur Jitiya. Khur Jitiya is observed during the eighth day of Krishna Paksh, when the mothers keep a Nirjala fast for 24 hours without water and food and perform the Jivitputrika Puja. The Paran is then observed, ending the fast and a joyous feast following it, consisting of curry, rice, madua roti and noni saag. The fast is said to secure the children's good health and prosperity and protection for a lifetime.
