Jyeshtha Gauri Avahana 2025: Significance
Jyeshta Gauri Vrat is a time when women devotedly seek blessings from Goddess Shakti, who they believe is the universe's greatest strength. Married women worship Goddess Gauri, hoping for happiness, stability and wealth in their marriages and to remove difficulties. Unmarried girls pray to Devi Parvati for a good husband. Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife, is worshipped as someone who makes wishes come true, giving her followers love, peace and safety.

In some areas, Gauri Puja is also regarded as a way to worship Goddess Lakshmi. According to a legend, when the gods were having problems caused by demons, they prayed to Goddess Srimahalakshmi. She heard their prayers and defeated the demons on the sacred day of Ashtami in the Bhadrapada month, saving the gods from danger. To show their respect and ask for protection for their husbands, women do the Jyeshta Gauri Vrat on Shukla Ashtami of Bhadrapada month.
Jyeshtha Gauri Avahana 2025: Rituals
Goddess Jyeshta Gauri is believed to bring auspiciousness, prosperity and blessings into the home. The rituals of Jyeshtha Gauri Pujan starts with Gauri Avahan, where there are two idols of Lord Ganesha and the idols of Goddess Gauri, who is believed to be another form of Goddess Parvati and in some traditions as Goddess Mahalaxmi. The devotees prepare offerings of 16 different types of vegetables, rice dishes, fruits and sweets among others for the Goddess. The idols must be brought in pairs, called Jyeshta and Kanishtha for purposes of symbolism and worship.
The rituals span three days, each holding its own sacred meaning. The first day involves Gauri Avahan, or welcoming. Two married women bring the idols into the home, one from the front and one from the back. As people carry the idols, they draw Goddess Gauri's footprints with turmeric and vermilion. They offer Haldi-Kumkum, Akshat, and welcome mantras as a sign of respect.
