Ancient stories say gods were once troubled by demons, leaving them helpless. Because of this, they prayed intensely to Goddess Srimahalakshmi, who was moved by their dedication. On the day of Ashtami during Bhadrapada, she defeated the demons and saved the gods. To commemorate this event and pray for their husbands' health and lives, married women observe the Jyeshta Gauri Vrat with faith on Shukla Ashtami of Bhadrapada.

Jyeshtha Gauri 2025: Rituals

The Gauri idol is set up on the Mul constellation, which appears after Rishi Panchami. People observe the vrat for three days with utmost devotion. On the first day, they pray to Goddess Gauri with dedicated rituals. Those worshipping decorate their houses by drawing Gauri’s feet at the entrance and all over the house with turmeric powder and vermilion. The Goddess Gauri is adorned with jewellery and gold as a sign of respect. In some areas, women also worship the Water God, Jala-Devata, with a copper pitcher full of water, mango leaves, champak leaves, and stones.

The second day is dedicated to the main worship of Goddess Gauri. Devotees show their gratitude and faith by giving offerings. A large meal with sixteen dishes is usually cooked for the ceremony, representing plenty and good fortune. Families come together to celebrate the arrival of the Goddess. On the third day, the ceremonies end when the clay statue of Gauri is submerged into water, which stands for her going back to her divine home. Married women are invited to the Haldi-Kumkum ceremony towards the culmination of the three-day event.

Jyeshtha Gauri 2025: Vrat Katha

In the ancient town of Anand Nagar lived Dharmapala, a wealthy merchant who lived comfortably with his wife, but felt unfulfilled without a child in their life. Despite his financial security, he wished for a child. He was devoted, very pious, and had performed endless acts of charity, he prayed eagerly for the blessing of a child. Finally, after many years, his prayers were answered when a son was born to them, although the priests indicated that this child would live a short life, and Dharmapala was distraught. His wife assured him, insisting that he put his trust in the Almighty. As years passed, their son married a young woman who was truly devoted to Mata Gauri, and continued to perform Gauri Pujan after they were married. Ultimately, due to her devotion and purity, Mata Gauri’s blessings through her devotion brought them blessings of health and longevity for Dharmapala’s son. This story is a beautiful example of the power of faith, devotion, and Gauri Pujan to navigate through life and its challenges.
