Kalashtami July 2025: Significance
Masik Kalashtami holds deep roots in Hindu legends and is closely associated with the fierce form of Lord Shiva known as Bhairava. Born from Shiva’s wrath, Bhairava represents divine justice and spiritual awakening. His origin stems from the cosmic tale where Shiva punished Lord Brahma for dishonesty, teaching a lesson about ego and truth.
The story recounts how Lord Shiva, to settle a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu, appeared as a boundless pillar of light. While Vishnu humbly accepted defeat, Brahma lied about finding the top, using a Ketaki flower as false proof. In response, Shiva took the form of Bhairava and severed Brahma’s fifth head, a symbol of false pride.
Masik Kalashtami is observed monthly on the Krishna Paksha Ashtami to honour Bhairava’s divine role. Devotees fast, visit temples, and offer prayers to seek protection, remove obstacles, and cleanse past karmas. Worshipping Bhairava on this day is believed to destroy negativity, reduce ego and bring spiritual growth under Lord Shiva’s compassionate yet just gaze.
