Karadaiyan Nombu 2025: Significance
Karadaiyan Nombu is a significant ritual primarily observed by married women in southern India, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. The festival commemorates the legendary story of Satyavan and Savitri, where Savitri's devotion saved her husband from death. Married women observe this ritual for their husbands' prosperity and longevity, while unmarried girls pray to find their ideal partner.
On this day, women offer prayers, observe a fast and prepare a special feast. Karadaiyan Nombu is observed on the day of transition between the Tamil months of Massi and Panguni. This festival is similar to other Hindu rituals, such as Vat Savitri Puja, Soubhagya Gauri Vratam, and Karva Chauth, which are observed in different parts of India.

Karadaiyan Nombu 2025: Rituals
On Karadaiyan Nombu, married women observe a day-long fast, breaking it only after completing the puja rituals. They traditionally break their fast by eating a unique Karadai preparation with butter, usually in the late afternoon or evening. This special dish, known as Karadai Nombu Adai holds a spiritual significance as it is believed to be the same dish Savitri offered to Lord Yama as a thanksgiving gesture for saving her husband's life.
Women worship Goddess Gowri on this day, offering the Karadaiyan Nombu Naivedyam to please the goddess. Special mantras are chanted during the offering, and the puja is performed at a specific time when the Massi month ends and the Panguni month begins. This ritual is significant, as it seeks the goddess's blessings for the well-being and longevity of husbands.
In addition to the puja and fasting, women also wear a yellow-colored thread, known as Karadai Nombu Saradu around their necks, symbolising their devotion to their husbands. A small flower is tied to this thread, adding to its significance. Women also decorate their homes with traditional kolam designs.
