Lakshmi Jayanti 2025: Significance
According to the Bhagavata Purana, Goddess Mahalakshmi emerged from the ocean of milk, Kshira Sagara, when it was churned by the Devas and Asuras. This epic event, which aimed to obtain the nectar of immortality, Amrit, yielded 14 treasures, with Goddess Lakshmi appearing as the third last. Her radiant beauty illuminated the sky, captivating the hearts of Devas, Asuras and Rishis.
As Goddess Lakshmi stepped out of the ocean, her eyes searched for her consort, Lord Vishnu. Upon finding him, she adorned him with the Vaijayanti garland and joined him as his divine partner. Sacred texts revere Lakshmi as the embodiment of wealth, fortune, auspiciousness, and beauty. Her name originates from the Sanskrit word 'Lakshya,' meaning aim or goal, symbolising the pursuit of all that is good and auspicious in life.
