On Kumar Sashti, devotees worship Lord Kartikeya with deep devotion and faith. Special offerings such as sandalwood paste, kumkum, incense sticks, dhoop, fresh flowers, and fruits are made to honour the Lord. Many also chant sacred hymns like the Skanda Shashti Kavacham, Subramaniya Bhujangam, or recite stories from the Subrahmanya Purana, which are believed to invite divine blessings and protection. Reading or listening to tales of Lord Murugan’s courage and divine acts is also considered spiritually uplifting.
In some regions, especially in traditional households, devotees draw a sacred circle outside their homes using cow dung and red clay. This is seen as a symbol of purity and divine energy. A strict fast is also observed by many devotees, where they refrain from eating or drinking from sunrise until they visit a Lord Kartikeya temple in the evening.
Some break their fast after the evening prayer, while others may take a simple meal at noon or at night. Temples dedicated to Lord Murugan come alive with special pujas and aarti. Devotees pray sincerely, asking the Lord to cleanse them of negative thoughts and guide them towards physical and spiritual well-being.
