Kurma Jayanti marks the appearance day of Lord Vishnu’s Kurma (Tortoise) incarnation. Lord Kurma is believed to be Lord Vishnu's second incarnation. According to Hindu texts, Lord Vishnu is believed to have materialised as a tortoise during the Samudra Manthan, helping to raise the Mandarachal mountain. As per the Hindu Panchang, this day falls on the Purnima of the month of Vaisakha. This year, Kurma Jayanti is being celebrated today, on 23rd May 2024.

Kurma Jayanti 2024: Significance Of This Sacred Day

Kurma Jayanti is a sacred festival commemorating the birth of Lord Vishnu, who took the form of a tortoise named Kurma. Hindu legends assert that Lord Vishnu lifted the "Mandaranchal Parvat" (mountain) on his back on this specific day. He accomplished this by assuming the form of "Kurma" at the "Ksheera Sagara Manthan." Since then, people have celebrated Kurma Jayanti as Lord Kurma's appearance day. The churning process would not have succeeded and the Gods would not have gotten the 14 heavenly gifts if the Kurma Avatar had not been present. Hindus worship Lord Vishnu in his second incarnation with great devotion and reverence.
