Magh Purnima 2025: Significance And Rituals

The Magh month is considered one of the most sacred periods in the Hindu calendar. It is during this time that the renowned Kumbh Mela and Magha Mela take place at Triveni Sangam in Prayag. Maghi Purnima, the last day of the Magha month, is particularly auspicious, marking the conclusion of this sacred period.

Magha Purnima is often referred to as a 'bathing festival' across India. Devotees take a sacred bath in holy rivers and lakes, such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri and Pushkar Lake. This ritual is believed to hold great religious significance, and many people observe fasts, offer alms and perform other charitable acts on this day. Additionally, Magha Purnima is also significant in Buddhism, as it is believed to be the day when Gautam Buddha announced his impending death.

On Magha Purnima, devotees worship Lord Vishnu, offer prayers and donations and participate in various religious ceremonies. They also pay respects to their ancestors, offering libations and performing Havan at Prayag. The day is filled with vibrant festivities, including the 'Float' festival celebrated at Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
