Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga: Story Behind The Origin
In ancient Ujjain, King Chandrasen ruled with devotion to Lord Shiva. His friend, Manibhadra, gifted him a radiant gemstone that made the king's aura shine brighter. News of the gemstone spread, and other kings sought to possess it, but King Chandrasen refused to give it up.
As a result, the other kings attacked Ujjain. King Chandrasen sought refuge in meditation, praying to Lord Mahakal. Meanwhile, a young boy, just five years old, arrived with his mother, a widow, to worship Lord Shiva. Inspired by the king's devotion, the boy also began worshipping Shiva.

The boy's mother, frustrated with his devotion, destroyed his worship setup. However, Lord Shiva's divine power created a beautiful temple, complete with a radiant Shivalinga. The boy's worship setup was restored, and his mother was amazed.
King Chandrasen and other kings arrived, seeking forgiveness for their actions. They joined the boy in worshipping Lord Mahakal. Suddenly, Lord Hanuman appeared, sitting in the boy's lap, and addressed the gathering, emphasising the power of devotion to Lord Shiva.
The boy's devotion, though unschooled in rituals, earned him a special place in Lord Shiva's heart. His lineage would produce the illustrious Nand, father of Lord Krishna. From that day forward, Lord Mahakal has been revered as the ruler of Ujjain.
Our ancient scriptures extol the boundless glory of Lord Mahakal, hailing him as the supreme deity and ruler of Ujjain. His worship has been a cornerstone of spiritual practice in the region.
