Mahakumbh 2025: Why Naga Sadhus Perform The First Amrit Snan In Maha Kumbh Mela?

According to Hindu legends, during the Samudra Manthan, a fierce battle ensued between gods and demons over the pot of nectar, Amrit Kalash. As a result, four drops of the divine elixir spilled onto four sacred sites: Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar, and Nashik. These locations subsequently became the venues for the revered Mahakumbh Mela. The Naga Sadhus, ardent followers of Lord Shiva, are accorded the privilege of taking the first sacred bath, owing to their profound devotion and intense spiritual practices.

This tradition, granting Naga Sadhus the first right to the sacred bath, is believed to have originated from the time of Adi Shankaracharya, who formed a group of Naga Sadhus to protect the faith. Other saints, in recognition of their role as guardians of the faith, invited the Naga Sadhus to take the first bath, as a mark of respect. As devotees of Lord Shiva, they were bestowed this special honour, which has since become an integral part of the Mahakumbh tradition, symbolising their deep spiritual energy and religious significance.

The Amrit Snan, or sacred bath, holds immense significance during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Hinduism. This ritualistic bath is believed to purify the soul, wash away sins, and grant spiritual enlightenment. According to mythological tales, the Amrit Snan is a reenactment of the divine nectar's spillage during the Samudra Manthan. By bathing in the sacred waters, devotees seek to attain moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The Amrit Snan is also believed to grant physical and mental well-being, as well as spiritual rejuvenation.
