Why Will the Festival Be Celebrated For 15 Days Instead Of 16 Days?

This time the Mahalakshmi vrat will be observed for 15 days instead of 16 because two tithis are falling on the same day: Saptami and Ashtami, and the vrat is counted in tithis, not sunrises. All sixteen tithis are present; two of them simply share a single calendar date at the end.

Mahalakshmi Vrat 2026: Significance

According to Bhavishya Purana, Goddess Lakshmi herself proposed this vrat to ensure long-lasting prosperity and protection of households. It is believed that devotees who observe this vrat with devotion and sincerity receive the blessing of inner peace and financial stability.

The Sixteen-Knotted Thread And Its Symbolism

The most distinctive ritual element of Mahalakshmi Vrat is the shodasha-granthi-sutra, the sixteen-knotted thread. Without it, the vrat is incomplete.

A long length of cotton string, typically dyed yellow with turmeric or fresh haldi paste, is taken on the morning of the first day. Sixteen knots are tied along its length, and as each knot is formed, the practitioner softly chants 'Om Mahalakshmyai namah.'

First, the thread is offered at the feet of Goddess Lakshmi, and then devotees should tie it on the wrist. Married women should tie this thread on their left wrist; unmarried girls and men should wear it on the right wrist. The thread stays in place for the full sixteen days.

If by any chance the thread breaks or slips off, devotees do not need to panic; they can either wear it again or dispose of it respectfully.

Mahalakshmi Vrat 2026: Puja Vidhi

The puja rituals can vary by region and family tradition. However, the standard practice is:

1. Devotees should wake before sunrise and take a bath. On day one only, they should set their intention before the Goddess for keeping this vrat and resolve to hold it for all sixteen days.
2. Then set up their puja space by placing a Mahalakshmi murti or photo on a red cloth on a clean chowki. Beside it, install a kalash filled with water, a coin, mango leaves and a coconut wrapped in red cloth.
3. Then sprinkle Gangajal over the space and over yourself. Apply tilak of roli and akshat to the murti and the kalash.
4. A pure ghee diya should be lit fresh each day and kept to the Goddess's right.
5. Each day devotees should offer sixteen of something: sixteen red flowers (lotus if available), sixteen akshat grains placed with the fingertips, sixteen fruits, sixteen sweets, sixteen betel leaves.
6. Read the katha with akshat in the right hand.
7. Recite the Shri Mahalakshmi Ashtakam or the Shri Sukta.
8. Close with aarti, offer kheer or panchmeva, and distribute prasad to everyone at home.

FAQs

1. What if I miss a day in the middle?

A single unavoidable miss — illness, travel, the monthly cycle — is forgivable. Add one day at the end and deepen the puja for the remaining days.

2. What foods are permitted during the vrat?

The phalahari-vrat option permits milk, fresh fruits, makhana, water-chestnut flour preparations, sabudana, buckwheat flour, rock salt, peanuts, ghee and unrefined sugar. Common salt, all grains, all lentils, onion and garlic are completely prohibited.
