Makar Sankranti 2025: Significance

Makar Sankranti is a deeply revered festival in India, celebrated with immense faith and joy across various states. The festival's significance is rooted in ancient religious texts, including the Bhagavad Gita, which describes the six months of Uttarayan as the daytime of deity and the six months of Dakhshinayan as the night for gods. According to Hindu scriptures, individuals who pass away during Uttarayan attain liberation and a position in Krishna Lok.

The festival is also associated with several mythological stories, including the legend of Bhishma Pithama, who waited for the sun to enter Uttarayan before discarding his mortal coil. Another story links Makar Sankranti to Yashoda Mata's fast, which granted her the blessing of having Lord Krishna as her son. Additionally, the festival is connected to the Gangawatran story, where Ganga followed Bhagirath Muni and met the ocean on Makar Sankranti.

As the sun enters the sign of Saturn on Makar Sankranti, Hindus believe that the Sun God, the father of Saturn, visits his son's abode. This auspicious occasion is considered a time for seeking blessings from these mighty planets, which can bring great success and prosperity. Consequently, people rejoice and worship the sun and Saturn on this holy festival, seeking their divine blessings.
