Margazhi Pournami 2025: Rituals

Devotees begin the Margazhi Pournami celebrations by waking up early for a sacred bath, known as 'Theerth Snanam'. They bathe in holy rivers, temples, or even at home, using turmeric, sandalwood, and other auspicious ingredients. This ritual is believed to purify the body and soul, preparing them for the spiritual festivities ahead.

Following the sacred bath, devotees adorn themselves in traditional attire and visit Lord Shiva temples. They offer prayers, perform 'Abhishekam' (ritualistic bathing of the deity), and present offerings of fruits, flowers, and 'Naivedyam' (prasad). The temples are beautifully decorated with intricate 'Kolams' (rangoli designs), and the air is filled with the enchanting sounds of 'Nadaswaram' (traditional Tamil music).

As part of the festivities, devotees also participate in 'Girivalam' (circumambulation) around the Shiva temples. This ritual is believed to bring spiritual growth, prosperity, and good fortune. The celebrations conclude with the chanting of sacred mantras, 'Arati' (waving of lamps), and the distribution of 'Prasad' among devotees.
