Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe this Ekadashi as it is believed to cleanse a person of all sins, even those from other lifetimes. Sacred Hindu texts refer to the disguised form of Lord Vishnu as Mohini. Since the lord manifested into Mohini on the Ekadashi tithi, the day has been commemorated as "Mohini Ekadashi" ever since.

Mention Of Mohini Avatar 

The Hindu traditions of the Mahabharata narrative epic introduce Mohini. She manifests as a version of Vishnu, who helps the devas (gods) maintain their immortality by reclaiming the Amrita pot from the Asuras (demons). She is the only female incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Since she is inherently feminine and extraordinarily attractive, she is sometimes referred to as an enchantress.

However, Mohini is referred to as Vishnu's Maya (illusion) in subsequent iterations. The Mohini mythology was enlarged, repeated, and rewritten in a number of writings once it gained popularity. The stories of Mohini-Vishnu spread across the other religions one after the other. 

Meaning And Significance Of Mohini 

Mohini means "Erotic magic or spell". The term derives from the word "moha," which may captivate, perplex, or deceive, or it might mean "delusion personified." Consequently, the Mohini has been called after the trait of desire known as moha. Mohini translates to "enchantress" in Sanskrit. "The essence of female beauty and allurement" is another inferred meaning of the term. 

Mohini’s Relationship With Lord Shiva

The most well-known and noteworthy story of her life is her union with Lord Shiva. The Bhagavata Purana states that Shiva longs to see Maya again after Vishnu tricks the Asuras with her. All the gods began to extol Lord Vishnu and to compliment Mohini's beauty. Lord Shiva was so overcome by this episode that he and his wife, Parvati, went to see Lord Vishnu right away.

When the sage Narada informs Lord Shiva in the Bhramanda Purana that Vishnu tricked the demons with his Mohini avatar, Lord Shiva ignores him. Lord Shiva requests Vishnu to take back Mohini's form when he and Parvati visit his house. Lord Shiva was enamoured with the lovely and alluring damsel that Lord Vishnu had transformed into. Lord Shiva, overcome with passion, went behind the stunning Mohini, seized her arms, and gave her a hug, but she managed to get away. Lord Shiva's sperm (seed) dropped to the earth during her passionate union, giving birth to Ayyappa, another god.

Appearance Of Mohini Avatar 

Mohini's look is not a sexual change but only a ruse to trick the Asura Bhasmasura. Mohini was transferred, or reborn, from Vishnu's corporeal form into a stunning "apsara." Mohini does not have a separate existence; rather, she is only a transient form that, when used for her intended function, is merged back into Vishnu.
