Nirjala Ekadashi, also known as Jyestha Shukla Ekadashi, occurs on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha, or the brilliant moon fortnight, in the Hindu lunar month of Jyestha. On this day, devotees observe Nirjala Ekadashi vrat, which is renowned for its strict austerities and strict fasting. This year, Nirjala Ekadashi vrat is being observed on 18th June 2024.
Since the word "nir-jala" means "without water," this Ekadashi fast is conducted without consuming any food or water. Nirjala Ekadashi is the hardest and most revered of all the Ekadashi fasts. Completing this vrat with complete dedication and austerity is the most gratifying and equal to observing all other Ekadashi vrats throughout the year.
However, devotees must take care of certain things while observing this sacred fast to make sure that the fast culminates appropriately. Gurudev Shrie Kashyap, Chairman and Founder of All India Institute of Occult Science shares a list of certain dos and don’ts that must be followed on the Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi fast.
Nirjala Ekadashi 2024: Rules To Follow While Fasting On Nirjala Ekadashi
1. Mental Preparation: As you psychologically get ready for the fast, be sure you mean well. This will assist you in overcoming Nirjala Ekadashi's physical obstacles. Make sure you are physically able to quickly as well. Before fasting, anyone with health concerns should speak with a healthcare provider.
2. Indulge In Spiritual Practices: You can take a good bath in the morning and change into fresh, white clothing. Purity and cleanliness need to be examined at the Ekadashi. Additionally, set aside time to read holy books like Vishnu Sahasranam and the Bhagavad Geeta, which include references to Lord Vishnu's name, splendour, and blessings for devotees. You can go to the temple and pray if that is feasible.
3. Perform Charitable Deeds: Giving to those in need of food, clothing, or money is an essential kind of charity. It's similar to lending a hand to people with good fortune to get spiritual advantages. It's also a good idea to feed cows, birds, and other animals out of sympathy.
4. Keep A Positive Mindset: Remind yourself to keep an optimistic and calm mindset. Steer clear of conflicts, rage, and other unpleasant feelings. Meditate to remain calm and focused during the day.

5. Restrictions To Follow: On this day, one should abstain from consuming water as it is Nirjala's Ekadashi. Disobeying the guidelines negates the goal of the fast and its spiritual advantages. Those who are not observing the fast must steer clear of tamasic foods including garlic, onions, meat and alcohol.
6. Avoid Sinful Activities: Refrain from sinful acts as they may be painful. Additionally, refrain from engaging in destructive words and deeds. The purpose of Nirjala Ekadashi is mental and bodily purity.
7. Avoid Excessive Sleep And Laziness: Abstain from excessive sleeping and avoid being lazy. The day of Nirjala Ekadashi is to pray and meditate upon Lord Vishnu.
What To Do During The Fast?
You can meditate and do mild tasks to save energy. You can divert your attention from hunger, thirst, and other problems by listening to scriptures and devotional music. Eat light, easily digested meals to break the fast.
