Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Vrat Katha

Hindu legends state that Bhima, the second of the five Pandava brothers, was the first to understand the significance of Nirjala Ekadashi after Sage Vyasa explained it to him. While the other Pandavas observed all of the Ekadashi fasts on a regular basis, Bhima found it challenging because of his voracious appetite. Despite his strong desire to observe the custom and reap its spiritual rewards, he frequently skipped the fasts because he couldn't bear the idea of going without food.

One day, Bhima went to Sage Vyasa in search of a way to honour the Ekadashi fasts without having to observe them all. Sage Vyasa responded by proposing Nirjala Ekadashi as a unique observance. This fast, in contrast to others, called for a full day of total abstinence from food and liquids. However, it came with a remarkable promise: if Nirjala Ekadashi were truly observed, it would bring the same benefits and merits as if all 24 Ekadashis were observed.

During the bright fortnight of the Jyeshtha month, Bhima fasted for Nirjala Ekadashi, as advised by Sage Vyasa. From that time on, Bhim Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi became other names for this austere and potent fast.
