Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Why This Sacred Ekadashi Vrat Is Called Bhimseni Ekadashi? Know Interesting Legend

As per the Hindu legend, Nirjala Ekadashi is referred to as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandav Ekadashi based on a discourse between the renowned Pandava Bhim and sage Vyasa. According to the tale, Bhim took sage Vyasa's guidance on how he could have the merits of all 24 Ekadashis, despite his insatiable hunger preventing him from observing a fast on every Ekadashi. Understanding Bhima's ambiguity and situation, Sage Vyasa suggested the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat to Bhimsen.

Bhima courageously vowed to have this difficult fast, yet as the day progressed, he started experiencing fatigue. His siblings brought him back to life using the holy water, Tulsi and Charanamrit. As a result of this event, Nirjala Ekadashi became recognised as Bhimseni Ekadashi.

Guided by Bhima, the remaining four Pandavas observed this vrat with immense devotion. This tale emphasises the importance of Nirjala Ekadashi as a transformative vow, providing a means for spiritual growth and Moksha. This sacred vrat is believed to provide the advantages of all 24 Ekadashis and is regarded as a path to liberation.
