Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Of the 24 Ekadashis in a year, Nirjala Ekadashi is the most significant. It is said that by keeping this fast, one will benefit from all of the other Ekadashi fasts. Nirjala Ekadashi is the most difficult of all the Ekadashi fasts as devotees abstain from eating and even drinking water. Since it is believed to bring great blessings and spiritual development, those who are unable to observe all Ekadashis should consider upholding this sacred day. This fast is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi and Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi. This year, the sacred fast of Nirjala Ekadashi will be observed by devotees on 6th and 7th June 2025, respectively.
Devotees must adhere to specific dos and don’ts on this highly auspicious day to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu and avoid committing any sin. We have curated a list of essential guidelines that must be followed on Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat below:
Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Dos And Don’ts You MUST Follow On Bhimseni Ekadashi Vrat
Using Water on Nirjala Ekadashi
Devotees are only permitted to use water twice during Nirjala Ekadashi: once during their morning bath and once more during achaman, or the ceremonial drinking of water, and taking a vow (sankalp). Devotees should refrain from drinking water altogether except in these two instances.
When To Drink Water On Nirjala Ekadashi
It is important to remember that water should not be consumed during Nirjala Ekadashi from the moment the vow is taken until the following day's sunrise (Dwadashi Tithi). Self-control and discipline are necessary for this rigorous fast.
Observing Strict Brahmacharya
Observing brahmacharya or celibacy is one of the main guidelines of Nirjala Ekadashi. Distractions from the material world should be avoided by devotees in order to concentrate on their spiritual development.

Wear Yellow Attire
Wearing yellow is very auspicious on Nirjala Ekadashi. Wearing it is thought to bring blessings and positivity, and Lord Vishnu adores this colour. Additionally, the devotees must abstain from wearing black clothes on this auspicious day.
Steer Clear Of Sinful Behaviour
It is important to refrain from any sinful activities during Nirjala Ekadashi, such as hurting living things or speaking maliciously. To ensure a pure and holy observance, devotees should also abstain from meat and alcohol the day before the fast.
Other Restrictions For Non-Fasting Devotees
The devotees who are not observing the Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat must abstain from consuming rice, tamasic food, meat, alcohol and eggs. Additionally, they must spend their day performing spiritual pursuits such as daan, visiting temples and doing Naam Jap.
Read Sacred Scriptures And Chant Mantras
On the occasion of Nirjala Ekadashi, it is highly rewarding to recite Vishnu Sahastranama, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Shrimad Bhagavatam, Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha and recite mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees can chant the Vishnu Mool Mantra and Hare Krishna Mahamantra throughout the day to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
