Panguni Amavasai 2025: Significance And Rituals
Panguni Amavasai is an important no-moon day in the Tamil calendar, observed in the month of Panguni (March–April). People perform significant rituals to seek blessings and spiritual peace. One of the main rituals is Tarpanam, where devotees offer water and food to their ancestors. Families gather near holy rivers, temples or the seashore to perform this ritual, believing it helps their ancestors’ souls find peace. Many people take a dip in sacred rivers as they believe it wash away sins and negative energy. Some also visit temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Amman to offer special prayers and seek divine blessings.

Fasting is another important ritual on Panguni Amavasai. Many devotees avoid food and spend the day praying and meditating for spiritual strength. Special abhishekams (ritual baths) are performed in temples, where deities are bathed with milk, honey, turmeric and sandalwood. People also light oil lamps and chant prayers, seeking protection from negative forces. Visiting Navagraha (nine planetary gods) temples is common, as devotees believe it helps remove obstacles and brings success.
Charity and helping others play a major role on Panguni Amavasai. People donate food, clothes and money to the poor, believing it brings good karma and divine blessings. Some organise Annadanam (free food distribution) at temples to serve devotees and the needy. Families also pray together at home, strengthening their bond and seeking prosperity.
