Parshuram Jayanti 2025: Bhagwan Parshuram Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Parashurama Jayanti falls on the tritiya tithi (third day) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. This festival is also referred to as Akshaya Tritiya, which is considered to be a favourable day to start new ventures, hold religious functions or do anything auspicious. With respect to the day itself, no matter what puja or donation, the karma committed on this day is considered a hundred times greater than on other days. Formally, Parashurama was manifested to relieve the burden of the Earth and to eliminate evil forces. It is said that fasting on this day is very beneficial. Parshuram Jayanti 2025: Significance

One of the seven immortals, Lord Parshuram, lived in the time of Dvapara Yuga. Old legends tell of a time when a King, named Kartavirya Arjuna, attempted to take the divine cow Kamdhenu from Jamadagni who was Lord Parshuram's father. When Jamadagni contested this, Kartavirya Arjuna seized the divine cow against Jamadagni's will. In anger, Lord Parshuram killed the King. The sons of Kartavirya Arjuna took revenge by killing Jamadagni. Following Jamadagni's death, Lord Parshuram mourned and vowed to rid the earth of all Kshatriyas and filled five lakes with Kshatriya blood, fighting a Kshatriya ruler twenty-one times. Lord Parshuram continued this vengeance until sage Rucheeka prevented it. Lord Parshuram performed many penances in devotion in his quest to impress Lord Shiva, who eventually found him worthy and blessed him with a divine weapon to protect human society from harmful forces.

Another tale tells us that as Lord Parshuram was going to meet Lord Shiva, he encountered Lord Ganesha, who tried to prevent him from passing. In the fight, Parshuram broke a tusk from Ganesha's face and earned Lord Ganesha the name Ekdanta. Lord Parshuram also played an important role in the subsequent epics of the Ramayana and Mahabharat, where he met two more incarnations of Lord Vishnu, one in the body of Lord Rama and the other in the body of Lord Krishna. His life depicts devotion, strength and a never-ending battle to uphold dharma.

Parshuram Jayanti 2025: Rituals

Like many other sacred festivals, devotees must bathe in the early morning (before sunrise) and wear clean clothes before beginning the puja ceremony for Parshuram Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. As part of completing the puja, devotees must worship the idol or image of Lord Vishnu using flowers, kumkum, sweets and chandan. Providing a holy offering during the puja made of tulsi leaves is especially auspicious and invites divine blessings.

Fasting on Parashurama Jayanti is very meaningful for devotees. Across India, Akshaya Tritiya is seen as an auspicious time to begin new businesses, to get married, to take on journeys, or to start new ventures. During their fast, devotees may eat only fruits and milk products, avoiding all cereals and pulses.

It’s important to note that Lord Parashurama, unlike Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, is believed to still be on Earth (and as such should not appear commonly in terms of Hindu worship), but he is honoured at some temples. There are quite a few temples dedicated to him along India’s west coast - Kusheshwara Tirtha in Pajaka. Every year, devotees await the comfort of the Akshaya Tritiya believing that their ventures begun on this auspicious day will endlessly grow, or flourish, and will continue to bring them success, prosperity and good luck.
