Pitru Paksha 2023: It is believed that during the sacred period of Pitru Paksha, the ancestors arrive on earth and accept the offerings, food and water. People remember and offer reverence to their deceased ones. This sacred period begins from the Purnima Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Over the course of sixteen days, Pitru Paksha is observed with a series of auspicious rites including Pind Daan, Shradh, and Pitru Tarpan. This year, Pitru Paksha will begin from 29th September 2023 and will go on till 14th October 2023. Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya is known as the final day of this auspicious period. There are certain rules and regulations that should be followed during this auspicious period to accumulate the blessings of deceased ancestors. Let’s have a look at some do’s and don’ts of Pitru Paksha which everyone must follow.
Pitru Paksha 2023: Do’s And Don’ts Of Shradh Days
1. Do Not Start New/Auspicious Endeavours - During these 15 days, it is not permitted to participate in auspicious rituals like marriage, engagement, moving into a new home, buying a new car, or mundan. All of such tasks are considered as unlucky.
2. Stay Away From Non-Vegetarian And Tamasic Foods - During the Pitru Paksha holy days, one must refrain from consuming any non-vegetarian foods. One must also avoid consuming alcohol, tobacco, and foods like onions, garlic, and brinjals.
3. Do Not Buy/Wear New Clothes - Not wearing or even purchasing new clothes is a crucial precaution to keep in mind during Pitru Paksha. It is believed to be unlucky and could cause issues for the home.

4. Do Not Indulge In These Grooming Activities - From the first day of Pitru Paksha itself, refrain from shaving, getting your hair cut, or cutting your nails as it is considered inauspicious.
5. Feed Food To Animals - During the holy days of Pitru Paksha, feeding animals including dogs, cows, and crows is regarded as an act of virtue. Your departed ancestors bless you since food reaches through these animals to them.

6. Do Tarpan For Ancestors - When offering tarpan to your ancestors, don't forget to include milk, white flowers, kush, and black sesame seeds in the water. It is thought that Kush facilitates the speedy satisfaction of deceased people and grants them peace.
7. Maintain A Tranquil, Kind Attitude - Since Pitru Paksha is a period of reconciliation, it is crucial to maintain serenity and kindness throughout these 15 days.
