Pradosh Vrat May 2025: Rituals

The Pradosh Vrat begins with a bath before sunset, which symbolises the beginning of this particular vrat. In the evening, people gather for worship of Lord Shiva, Nandi the bull, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. There is also an offering made to the Shivlinga of milk and water, which symbolises the purity and devotion. A holy vessel, called a Kalash is filled with water, covered with Durva grass and a lotus flower is drawn through the middle to represent and display its sacred nature. Packed with devotion, offerings of flowers, betel nuts, betel leaves, some coins and some rice are offered to the deities.

A significant part of the ritual is chanting Lord Shiva's powerful 'Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra' 108 times, which is believed to bring healing and protection. Devotees often put sacred ash (vibhuti) on their foreheads as a symbol of purity and letting go of material things. It's also considered lucky to light a diya (lamp) during Pradosham.
